The Undercurrent was born from a desire to flaunt the Gold Coast through the eyes of locals. Featuring only local Gold Coast artists who share in a passion for this city’s unique culture, and offer them the opportunity to create projects on their home turf. The Undercurrent’s name is two-fold; a nod to our thriving surf culture and unveiling a side of the Gold Coast that may not be common knowledge, but definitely should be. Share your pride in this city by purchasing one of these unique t-shirts.

Back in 1956, Lennons Broadbeach Hotel was both the first Broadbeach high rise and the Gold Coast’s tallest building. Located on a site previously mined for mineral sand, the hotel was often referred to as ‘an oasis in the desert’. While the luxurious hotel featured Queensland’s largest private swimming pool, the real star of the show was the 1.5m cast terrazzo sculpture seal fountain which sat poolside. While Lennons sadly closed its doors in 1987, the distinguished seal was saved and later relocated to the entrance of the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre to proudly watch over the ongoing transformation of Broadbeach. In 1985, the suburb was also chosen for Queensland’s first casino, Conrad Jupiters. Paying homage to Jupiter Mosman, the 12-year-old Aboriginal boy who first discovered a gold nugget in Charters Towers, Queensland leading to a gold rush in the area. Many now seek their own fortune at the recently renamed venue, The Star Gold Coast.
